Reflections on Teaching with Technology

TEACHING WITH TECHNOLOGY           Taking this course has opened my eyes to the different types of ways we can view and use technology in language teaching. I learned that there are both advantages and disadvantages to certain types of traditional or Web 2.0 technology that can be used in a classroom setting. As a language teacher, becoming familiar with the type of students you have, the different types of technology, the advantages and disadvantages to each technology, and how you can use them effectively will prove to be the key to a successful teaching and learning experience. I learned how to work with several tools, such as Google Slides, Padlet, Mentimeter, Wordwall and Kahoot. Familiarizing myself with the different tools and what I liked and did not like about each, will help me as a teacher to make decisions that best suit my teaching style, my students, and the location of teaching.

Third Blog Entry   What is Web 2.0?         Technology is an ever-changing concept in today’s world. The resources within it are also evolving, such as the internet itself. The definition of the term Web 2.0 has been discussed and defined in different ways by different scholars. It is generally defined as a change in the way people view and use the internet allowing for collaboration and sharing of knowledge. It refers to the second generation of web development and design that allows users to create, share, and access content which is a departure from the previous use of web as a place for just receiving information and entertainment. The use of Web 2.0 in language teaching has both advantages and disadvantages. As a whole, the benefits outweigh the barriers, but there need to be measures taken, such as providing training and technical suppor

Module 2: Making Decisions about Technology

MY PHILOSOPHY IN TEACHING WITH TECHNOLOGY Second Blog Entry My teaching values One of the factors I value in teaching is having the students self-regulate. To achieve this using technology, the students can be shown ways to learn actively on their own -when at home- and with their classmates’ help -when in the classroom. To achieve this goal, the class needs to be student-centered, with a great encouragement for the students to criticize and take criticism. If there are point allocated to correcting their classmates and themselves, they will be more engaged in what their classmates have to say, learn how to tell other people their mistakes nicely, and to correct themselves with the help of other students without the need to always look to the teacher for approval. Having the students engage in group activities with a shared grade will ensure that they are at all times actively participating and helping each other learn. Appropriate Technology for the Classroom The technology I will c

THE HISTORY OF CALL: A SUMMARY First Blog Entry What is CALL?        The chapter 'The History of CALL' provides a comprehensive historical overview of the field of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL), including its development, current status, and future potential. There are many definitions given of CALL such as, “the search for and study of applications of the computer in language teaching and learning” (Levy 1997, 1; Amaral 2011, 365), “any process in which a learner uses a computer and, as a result, improves his or her language” (2003, p.7) and “learners learning language in any context with, through, and around computer technologies” (2005, p.4). Emergence :          CALL emerged in the 1960s and 1970s. Warschauer’s typology divides CALL into chronological phases of Structural CALL, Communicative CALL and Integrativ
